Thanks for the Laughs
After a brief absence, due to an unanticipated and tragic loss suffered by close family friends, I was looking for something to boost my spirits. Visits from my grandson and my children, accompanied by some serious hugs and handholding, did much to improve my spirits. Given the completely unknown tenure of our time on earth, and my own ever-increasing age, I have come to an enhanced appreciation of just simply spending time with loved ones.
This morning dawned much brighter. With a much improved disposition, I returned to the blogosphere to check out, among other things, the local goings on. What I found were a two items which made me chuckle quite heartily.
First it appears that the New Albany Sewer utility is asking to get even deeper into our pockets: City Council to hear sewer funding request. It appears that after recently receiving a rate hike of 8% and about $11M worth of EDIT monies, they are looking for another $540K. Not to worry though, because, ”Fifer said the $540,000 wasn't factored into the rate-increase package in August and isn't absolutely necessary.”
I must ask three questions of his honor the mayor. First and foremost, why was the $540K not factored into the August rate-increase package? Second, why ask to expend more of our hard-earned money when it isn’t absolutely necessary? And third, what and where are your priorities for Economic Development and the expenditures of EDIT monies?
This fiasco, humorous as it may be, is the lesser of the two entertaining issues I encountered this morning. The second is to be found over at the quasi-socialistic, I mean progressive, New Albany Confidential
In a series of rambling, somewhat incoherent and verbose postings, the author launches a vitriolic attack against the Freedom of Speech (FOS) blog, and the purported true identity of its editor/author. The broadside begins with a thinly veiled justification for his contempt, namely the posting at the FOS blog of a respectful photograph of the mayor’s family at the Harvest Homecoming Parade, accompanied by an innocuous question. Appears the NAC author is (falsely) concerned for the children; boy, hasn’t that fiddle been overplayed a bit?
Then the author delves into the readily apparent, yet undisclosed reason for his contempt, namely that he does not really know the true identity of the FOS editor/author. This is indeed what gets into his crawl, for his brief charade at defending the children provides but a rough segue into his true purpose of outing, then personally denigrating (as this author predicted over at SOLNA) the purported FOS writer, whom he identifies as, ”a pathetic Internet troll.”
Note that this barrage of attacks takes not one posting, nor two, but a total of three posts over two days. Must not have gotten the traction the author wanted. Seems he is trying to put into practice that old Vladimir Lenin advice, ”A lie told often enough becomes the truth.”
Perhaps the author should have spent his time and column inches (bandwidth,) and answered the question originally posited by FOS.
Daddy, why indeed are they booing you?

Quasi-socialistic?
You really do crack me up. I'm not entirely sure what socialism has to do with accountability in free speech, but then again, you've positioned yourself quite well to be a hypocrite in that department.
But I know what you mean about unexpected and tragic losses. I've had two in the past week, both far too soon.
Indeed, life is short. Now, back to the Sodrel bashing.
Thank you for this posting Blogtastic.
I would like to add to your article this;
Mr. Baylor you posted the comment on one of your blogs, and I quote you: For many years, several of us have referred to Harvest Homecoming as "poor white trash days."
And you attack FOS for the comment that was included in a picture of the mayor and his family? The mayor was booed at during the parade.
Words are bullets Mr. Baylor and you are shooting blanks at Freedom of Speech.
However, Baylor your remarks are without merit. And "directed only at the editior of FOS" is pure speculation.
Maybe my reaction is mixed with a little disappointment in you roger. I did not always agree with you, but I no longer respect how articulated you are.
But this is the pot calling the kettle black!
Freedom of Speech is entitled to give opinions/views concerning the mayor and his adminstration. It is one that other citizens of the community share with them.
And it is healthy to argue what is best for New Albany. But it is wrong of NAC/Editor to accuse FOS of lack of conscience and other statements you made simply because they do not share your opinion's Roger.
You must have your boxers to tight over your head. Because you sure talk out of both sides of your mouth.
And, unlike you Roger, several people support FOS for staying and exposing with facts the real truth about local government in our community.
Unlike NAC blog.
Albert Einstein once said, "If the facts dont' fit the theory, change the facts." and that is what you at NAC/Editor are doing, changing the facts to fit the mayors agenda and for your own personal gain.
Maybe roger, you should take you bat& ball and go home.
Bravo, Anon 10:15
You expressed my opinion only much more articulate and elegant than I could have ever been.
I am indeed sorry about your losses. Hopefully there will be some time for all of us before we must endure another.
I'm not entirely sure what socialism has to do with accountability in free speech...
My point exactly!
A careful reading of your postings in question indicates that you are not really interested in free speech. It's a ruse to cover your true agenda of outing and hopefully subverting individuals, rather than address any potential validity of their opinions or ideas.
Such a reading does indicate, in the alternative, that you are interested in getting people to conform to your narrow guidelines of what is, or should be, correct. Is that not socialistic dogmatism?
Why even one of your blog’s visitors, commenting on the allegedly offensive photo, stated that, ”[I]f it was a photo of Sodrel and it said, “daddy why did that man turn his back on you,” I think folks would find it appropriate.” Correct me if I am wrong, but I recall no negation or clarification from you?
Me furthermore thinks that you are either: (1) still supportive of the mayor, or (2) not supportive of a certain woman whom you think could possibly run as his successor. Since your blog has grown silent in its formerly rabid defenses associated with issue #1, a strategic decoupling if you will, then I presume it is issue #2. And apparently that person does not conform to your narrow guidelines of what is, or should be, correct. This is the gist which can be readily gleaned from the totality of your postings on the issue.
I have no problems with your opinions, or most any others for that matter.
Let’s just be honest about from where we are coming ….

Great job blogtastic and anonymous 10:15 AM, spoken loud and clear.
Ice T put it so well: (verse 4)
Freedom of Speech, let'em take it from me
Next they'll take it from you,
then what you gonna do?
Let'em censor books, let'em censor art
PMRC,this is where the witch hunt starts
You'll censor what we see, we read, we hear, we learn
The books will burn
You better think it out
We should be able to print/say anything, our lungs were meant to shout.
And our keyboards we will bring alive.
Say what we feel, yell out and print what's real
Even though it may not bring mass appeal
Your opinion is yours roger, my opinion is mine
If you don't like what I'm sayin'?
But don't attack FOS, always keep an open mind
A man who fails to read and listen is blind
We only got one right left in the world today
Let me have it roger or throw The Constitution away!
Then I read your lame response NAC:
There is no intent to surpress free speech,(How about facts) but only to stress the point that it retains an element of responsibility as well.(What is your responsibility to your so called 5 readers Roger?)
Adults should be adults, shouldn't they? (Then act like one Roger and admit it's just personal with FOS)
What sort of message does this send to children? (Yell what kind of message are you sending NAC/Roger about HH as "poor white trash days."
Sounds like to me your doing alittle back peddling on your remarks?
I love it. Anonymous comments criticizing my take on free speech.
This is scripted comedy, right? If it's improv, I stand in awe.
A careful reading of your postings in question indicates that you are not really interested in free speech. It's a ruse to cover your true agenda of outing and hopefully subverting individuals, rather than address any potential validity of their opinions or ideas.
In the sense that cowards should be outed, I suppose I agree. It reminds me of my colleague Bluegill listing a dozen erudite ideas for positive change, and having an anonymous troglodyte reply, in essence, “you left the part out about hating the mayor.” And in the end, about all that stands between us is my insistence that anonymity is dishonorable, and your insistence that it is not.
Such a reading does indicate, in the alternative, that you are interested in getting people to conform to your narrow guidelines of what is, or should be, correct. Is that not socialistic dogmatism?
I’d suggest that dogmatism is spectrum-neutral … and in the end, about all that stands between us is my insistence that anonymity is dishonorable, and your insistence that it is not.
Had Mike Sodrel’s children been deployed as surrogate rapier as James Garner’s children were, my reaction would be the same, but why offer clarification for the hypothetical? Of course, in the end, about all that stands between us is my insistence that anonymity is dishonorable, and your insistence that it is not.
The best example of strategic decoupling is sure to come when Auntie V throws the Vickster under the bus when she’s good and finished with her. Now, just to avoid confusion, permit me to provide you with a pull quote that you may use any time you wish: “Speaking personally, I remain supportive of the mayor.” When and if the woman in question refrains from the minor league Machiavellianism and puts forth some semblance of a platform, perhaps my opinion about the current mayor might change. It’s worth remembering that in the end, about all that stands between us is my insistence that anonymity is dishonorable, and her insistence that it is a legitimate tool of ambition.
Let’s just be honest about from where we are coming ….
Funny, but that’s exactly what I’ve been telling her. Is your “honesty” in this sense meant to be universal, or merely a dodge to obscure your own prejudices? Verily, only the anonymous shadow knows … and in the end, about all that stands between us is my insistence that anonymity is dishonorable, and your insistence that it is not.
Did I manage to get the main point across?
Honestly, I don't know how we'll get around this fundamental difference. I can no more imagine having a viewpoint without my name alongside it that I can drinking Lite beer or shopping at Wal-Mart.
One anonymous coward wrote to remind me of this quote:
For many years, several of us have referred to Harvest Homecoming as "poor white trash days."
It's true. Then we laugh and go eat rolled oysters and chicken & dumplings. I hope that doesn't make me ... but, of course, irony doesn't play well here.
Then, yet another anonymous coward said:
What is your responsibility to your so called 5 readers Roger?)
Uh, the tool known as the "site counter" exists to help you resolve this confusion.
That's all, folks. I really enjoyed the floor show, but now I have a bed to catch.
Why don't you just answer blogtastic's question Mr. Baylor.
Daddy, why indeed are they booing you?
Your problem Roger is:
1.Your superego
2.You exaggerate your sense of self-importance
3.Your a phony
4.You have an inflated ego in your superiority to others
Respect is earned not demanded, lick your wounds and move on.
All I've ever asked is that people who carry the banner of responsibility and accountability be responsible and accountable when it comes to their mode of discourse.
I find it ironic in the extreme that the blogtastics of the world are so very selective when it comes to applying their standards. It's why I find all this amusing, and continue on the path of upholding your own standard and applying it to you. It's called a level playing field.
Slime away, little ones. Every time you do it under the veil of anonymity, the reality based community laughs.
At you. Not with you.
Some of the most awesome and told ages after ages are anonymous, Mr. Baylor.
BTW, how did the cover charge & beer garden go for your group? We couldn't move Friday or Saturday nights at some establishments. Hope it went well for your endeavor.
Flaws in reasoning, avoiding Blogtastics question. Daddy, why indeed are they booing you?
When trying to make a case against FOS or anyone else we frequently encounter your severe flaws avoiding the facts which we challenge your coherency or validity of your position.
You need to pick your battles better when you are able to adequately answer questions and back up your so called statements.
Remember,we all have opinions.
Your reasoning process itself in your many posting at NAC reveals you as a weak person but also close minded.
BTW, what makes you think your so important in New Albany.
I've asked questions before and not been answered, but what the heck.
"Daddy, why indeed are they booing you?"
(a) Their daddys didn't teach them good manners.
(b) Indigestion from too many Big Bufords.
(c) Incomprehension in the face of a changing world.
(d) A hidden agenda.
(e) A bad night's sleep.
(f) Mistook the mayor for George W. Bush and did what comes naturally.
I could go on. You may now anonymously respond, but geez, try to do something about the syntax. It's being tortured worse than the prisoners in Gitmo.
Meanwhile, all of you continue to give FOS a free pass for involving the mayor's kids in a political attack. I seriously doubt you'd sanction the same tactic if used against you ... but I guess being anonymous (i.e. weak and close-minded) means never having to cede ground to consistency in reasoning.
But wait ... buy your objections now, and there's even more:
"BTW, what makes you think your so important in New Albany."
Is that a question or a "so-called" statement? I'm guessing a question, for which English helpfully provides an item called the "question mark."
As you have noted, we all have opinions. I've chosen the forum of a reality-based blog to express them. I place my name alongside, and as previously noted, wouldn't think of doing it any other way. I look at it as being a support group of sorts, as a means of indulging my muse, and to remind certain elements that thanks to advances in technology, their activities can be monitored in an informative and entertaining way.
Important? That's hard for me to determine. Part of a well-balanced weekly schedule? Yes, it is.
Thanks for asking, masked one.
What a lame excuse Roger Baylor. The bottom line again anonymous is your hang-up.
And you roger accuse Dan Coffey of grandstanding.
Great blog blogtastic.
Wow!
Go away for a few days and the blog lights up like the Fourth of July.
I guess some folks will never get over true [F}reedom of [S]peech.

The First Amendment prevents Mayor Garner and his croonies from abridging the Freedom Of Speech blog.
So I am urging fellow citizens to read FOS they have a right to question issues on which they feel strongly about seems like a fundamental right to me.
What is so “freedom” about a blog that spouts putrid innuendoes and half-truths, and then doesn't allow rebuttal? Sure, it is “freedom” for her to criticize without accountability, hiding behind a veil of anonymity; but it is not “freedom” for anyone else. At least Roger has the balls to tell people who he, what he believes, and then stands up to what he says.
I suspect that if FOS personally attacked you, using your family as fodder, your attitude would change.
The use of the name “Freedom of Speech” is the best example of an oxymoron since “Deutsche Demokratische Republik.”
Nothing like another progressive spouting out on behalf of the slave master. I totally disagree with you. If you read several of NAC posting he only states his opinion and never deals with real facts. He knows absolutely nothing about politics. Anyone who does not agree with him he attacks. So take your holy attitude and go back to NAC.
You have no bases for your so called "anonymous complaint."
Hats off to Freedom of Speech for taking this adminstration on.
I agree also with many of the other anonymous postings here.
We are lucky enough to live in a free country, instead of taking advantage of the information FOS offers.
Roger decided to try to attack and shame a group of citizens and tries to surpress other peoples' opinions.
As well as attacking the FOS Blog only because it offends him to hear disagreeable words and facts about the so godly Mayor King James administration.
I have had nothing but positive communication with FOS Blog. And I highly recommend to every taxpayer to look at the real issues.
neal page,
The mayor was boo'd at and our family heard it. In fact, he was called several names as he pass by.
Could it be that NAC turns a blind eye to the real truth about our so-called mayor job performance the last several years?
Could it be a fact that what bothers NAC/Editor is to many facts and real information is being printed in black and white for all readers of FOS to see?
Unlike NAC.
Note that when I offer the case against anonymity, this is regarded by some as an act of aggression. I'm suppressing free speech by insisting on the responsible exercise of it. How is that possible? From whence comes this weird connection between personal responsibility and suppression?
What am I going to do, place a cherry bomb in her computer?
In the end, what makes me laugh the hardest is the continued use by "anonymous" of "so called."
Here's the way it should be used:
"Freedom of speech as a concept i mimicked by the so-called Freedom of Speech blog."
Wait -- I found something even funnier:
Anonymous said...
I agree also with many of the other anonymous postings here.
Imagine someone reading the theses posted on the church door, not by Martin Luther, but by "anonymous." The passerby stops to read them, and says:
I agree also with many of the other anonymous postings here.
So much for the Reformation.
See, even at atheist can deploy religious imagery when suitable.
new albanian,I hope for your sake you never ever plan to run for any elected office in New Albany.
I never said the Mayor wasn't booed, in fact we all know that he was.
The fact that he was booed shows that New Albany is full of boorish people who enjoy booing (with the protection of a crowd) and then post anonymous comments in favor of the cause-of-the-week someone else decides to espouse.
If citizens have a right to boo the President, then why not Mayor Garner. The picture waas not offensive nor was the caption spoken in truer words.
Citizens have the right to boo anyone they choose, particularly those in the public eye.
But I find it very unlikely that Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Colin Powell, or Rick Petino would choose to stand around at a parade and boo anyone. Those four people have culture and have been brought up in what I would consider to be a proper manner.
Now, I can see white trash sitting on a curb on Spring St. booing and then laughing at a picture of the Mayor using his family as fodder for a personal attack. Need I explain their upbringing?
I seriously doubt the mayor's son asked him why people were booing, so your assertion of "truer words" is just anti-James Garnerism on your part.
Finally, if the picture was not offensive, then why don't you post a picture of your family, and ask people to photoshop it? I think your opinion would change.
So your in support of the Garner Adminstration? What does his kids have to do with it? So it's ok for NAC to attack other elected officials? And is there any differencwe with Editor/NAC turning his back on Mike Sodrell? Is your issue not a double edge sword. It's ok for progressives but not middle class taxpayers to comment, boo and have an opinion?
Give us a break! I think it's called a baylor double standard.
Try to convince us that his kids have never heard people booing at there dad? Sell it to someone at Richo's, and have a beer on me.
Garner is a one-termer and we all know it.
This will be my last comment because you nitwits don't seem to get it.
I AM AGAINST PERSONALLY ATTACKING SOMEONE BY USING HIS OR HER FAMILY!!!! THAT IS THE SOLE POINT.
Show me where someone had used Sodrel's family as fodder, and I will condemn their use as well.
Get off your white-trash ass and learn to write and comprehend the English language.
neal page diamond,
Your sure rough around the edges. Could it be you are a progressive?
the new albanian,
"America was founded on the principle of freedom of speech."
It's not about freedom of speech because we retain free speech. It's about ending corrupt politics.
In the United States (including New Albany) a person who holding political or public office has no rights. A person who enters public office, unlike the private citizen, should come under unrestrained public scrutiny this is considered essential to the workings of democracy.
FOS BLOG has the public interest, unlike NAC.
Corruption in New Albany? Could this be why were in the mess were in?
You bet ya!
Mayor Garner has his finger in all kind of pies.
"Without free speech no search for truth is possible...Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one's thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist.
There can be on right of speech where any man/women...(is) compelled to surpress his honest sentiments.
Equally clear is the right to read. To suppress free speech is a double wrong.
It violates the rights of the readers as well as those of the writer.
In conclusion, I support the editor of Freedom of Speech blog.
Blogtastic, wonder what your thoughts are on Freedom of Speech?
Go-Cats!

"A person who enters public office, unlike the private citizen, should come under unrestrained public scrutiny this is considered essential to the workings of democracy." In case you didn't know, the United States is a republic. Nice comment FOS, you don't even know what type of government we have. Yeah, sure, I believe you are a political science professor.
Nothing like a know it all progressive. When will you all learn. I guess your blaming these local problems on the editor of FOS?
Freedom of speech and freedom of action are meaningless without freedom to think. I may disagree new albanian with what you have to say, but again that is my right.
"When will you all learn." This a question. You need to end a question with a question mark. Also, you really shouldn't write "you all."
"I guess your blaming these local problems on the editor of FOS?" This one is not a question, it is a statement, hence no need for a question mark. Also, the word is "you're" not "your".
I'm sorry to hear that you are in Iraq, I shouldn't have been so hard on you.
I am John Kerry, and I approve this message.
so tell me something the new albanian, does Mayor Garner pay you to cover his a-- or do you just do it out of the kindness of your heart?
Yeah, um, I can see that.
So you think I am New Albanian, ey? “Bzzzt. Sorry Hans, wrong guess. Would you like to go for Double Jeopardy where the scores can really change?”
I agree with many postings on FOS. My advice to the editor be strong and follow your own convictions.
When I'm hungry, I eat. When I'm thirsty, I drink. When I feel like saying something, I say it." I strongly support Freedom of Speech blog.
Freedom of Speech blog is common ground and common sense.
My kind of blog.
Too bad that all the people who know how to run our city are busy trying to defend our corrupt current mayor.
Garner out in 2007
How absurd men are! Freedom of Speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Get up and pitch or shut up about other peoples opinions.
